![]() ![]() Right about now, then, you’re feeling a lot like your grandparents felt every day, to judge from “The Food of a Younger Land,” a portrait of the American diet in the 1940s. If, however, like a lot of Americans you were rushed, you pulled into a fast-food franchise and ordered a muffin with egg, bacon and yellow cheese - a meal with lots of sodium, cholesterol, saturated fat and zillions of calories. If you live by the government’s nutritional guidelines, you sat down this morning to a breakfast of protein and fiber - maybe juice, whole grain cereal and low-fat milk. ![]() 7/6/2023 0 Comments Chisholm unbought and unbossed![]() SHIRLEY ANITA ST: I am not the candidate of black America, although I am black and proud. ![]() And she earns that distinction again four years later when she became the first black president from a major party to run for president and the first woman to seek the Democratic nomination. I had to do some research of my own as I didn’t know much about the origins of Krampus and was immediately taken in by Brom’s Norse take on the myth of Krampus. This take on Krampus was absolutely fascinating. I have never been more pleasantly surprised by a book with such a disturbing cover. Strangely enough, Krampus ended up being one of my favorite books of the year, providing a depth and nuance to famous and infamous figures that surprised me, as well as giving me a cast of new characters to root for. This book was profound and though-provoking and so much more emotional than I anticipated. What I got was wildly different and infinitely more powerful. I went into Krampus fully expecting a horror novel that ripped Christmas apart. I was reading A Christmas Carol, which has been my Christmas tradition for about a decade now, and decided to balance it out with something completely different. Picking up Krampus: The Yule Lord started out as a bit of a joke. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This volume includes biographical essays of eighty-five women, illuminating the significant role each have played in shaping America’s greatness, accompanied by powerful photographs that help illustrate who they are. ![]() Each of these sections is preceded by an introduction, which provides insight into these women’s stories in a historical timeline.
